Classification Numbers for the Pressure Washer Industry
Background
The Standard
Industrial Classification (SIC) code numbering system for designating
business activities in the U.S. was published for the last time
in 1987, and has since been abandoned. The SIC system was replaced
by the North America Industry Classification Systems (NAICS). The
same as NAICS is used by Canada, U.S. and Mexico.
Like the SIC,
the NAICS gets a major update once every 10 years, with more modest
changes each five years. Therefore, the 2002 NAICS is the current
designation system for all business/economic activities, and the
next version will be the 2007 NAICS.
Our Numbers
The following
four NAICS numbers relate to our industry. The old SIC numbers are
shown for reference.

Notes:
- NAICS recognizes either "pressure washer" or "power
washer" as the same thing.
- Unlike the other number, 423850 for distributors does not contain
a specific reference to pressure washers. The U.S. Census Bureau,
who administers the NAICS, states that there is no number unique
to pressure washer distributors, and they do not intend to assign
one. The Census Bureau further states that 423850 applies to pressure
washer wholesales, retailers and servicing dealers.
